To make the feasting season a healthier one, Elly Kleinman says, it's important to practice awareness, manage our stress and emotions, and plan in advance. Whether you're headed home for the holidays, going on a long-planned vacation, or traveling for business, traveling can bring chaos even with the best eating and exercise plans. However, nowadays it is possible and frankly said quite easy, to stick to your diet and fitness program, or at least avoid gaining weight while you travel? A little advance planning before hitting the road can go a long way in maintaining good health.
As he is also traveling quite a bit, Elly Kleinman, member of Educause and CEO of the Americare companies has developed a system for eating healthy when on the road.
Another important insight is to never leave hungry, or you'll be much more likely to make poor food choices. Don't think of traveling as a break from your regular life and healthy eating habits. Calories count whether they are consumed in the air, on the road, or in a hotel.
Always carry a bottle of water with you. Forget the sugary beverages and drink more water! Make sure you never leave the house without a water bottle. If you are driving, you can pack a cooler full of water bottles or you could also purchase a gallon of water to store in your car and refill your water bottles throughout the trip.
When it comes to fitness and exercising, your options on the road will probably be different than they are at home, but that can sometimes be a positive thing. Variety and having options, is a big part of enjoying exercise. Make sure you get some kind of exercise every day. Planning ahead your vacation can help you save time for at least one activity each day. Instead of taking a bus tour take advantage of walking or sightseeing tours. If you are spending a lot of time in the car, make sure you stop at rest areas and get moving. Pack healthy snacks during your next trip so you don’t find yourself resorting to high sugar, unhealthy snacks if you are in a bind. Unsalted almonds or an apple are a great last minute snack option.
Follow Kleinman’s tips, and make sure you and your family stay healthy during the holiday travels.
